Up Front

The Front cafe at Lyneham is a lovely little cafe/gallery. The chairs are mostly good, the soy hot chocolate was ok, the choc muffin thing was pretty ordinary. It's spacious, though, and not too loud - a good SnB space.

We had a lovely SnB there tonight - new people, not so new people, old mates. A great range of ages and abilities. We were the only ones there (about 10 or 12 of us) and there was plenty of room for more people. Even the cafe dog got a chair to itself!

Pity about the attitude. Last month's problem was, perhaps, an understandable mix up over confirmation but tonight's announcement that they can't guarantee us space every month because they'd like to keep it open for a "more appropriate" (I quote) activity is totally FUCKED!

Yes, it's their business and they can do what they like with it. I have a suggestion about what they can do with it and with what degree of force, but I am a lady and cannot say.

I will say, though, that I will not be back.

It's fair enough that he wouldn't want us there because he might not normally be open on a Monday night ... but saying that something "more appropriate" might come up is a little bit cruel.

It's a shame that he doesn't realise that knitting and crocheting is an art form just like painting and printing and music. His loss, I say.

I still love the Front for their vibe, their music and their poetry slams, but I reckon we should find somewhere in the inner north that is open and able to have us, even if that might not be a Monday night.

PS I walked out before the last conversation ensued with him so I have no idea what else was said.

It's bad mojo to drive away knitters.

I couldn't have expressed it better - and since you've written the post I planned for today but so much better, I think I'll just link to you.

I was thinking we might try Trinity assuming it's open on Mondays...

What activity could be more appropriate for any cafe than knitting? Public sex shows? Violent vidoeo games? Drunken men watching sport? What a wanker!

Hmmm...not a great outcome.

Perhaps the Labor Club?

What a pity he's got that attitude... is there anywhere at Dickson that would be more amenable?

Perhaps he's trying to court a clientel more like the mangy loiterers (and their dogs) such as were hanging around the door of The Front... maybe if we all dressed in faux dreads and knitted rasta dread hats we'd be more acceptable. Fuck him I say. A shame though, cos it was a nice venue!

i'm assuming that there would have been a few coffees sold, maybe some nibbleys as well... what a total nutcase to not put together the idea that having a group meeting in your establishment is going to generate business he wouldn't have otherwise had. who gives a toss what people are doing with their hands as long as some of it involves handing over cash for beverages?
and how many of you would have otherwise ventured into that cafe on that day if you weren't going to be meeting people specifically? i'm guessing that'd be none....
OOOOOGHGHGGGHHHHHHHH.

Hmmm.... The info I can find on Trinity says they're open 7 days from 3pm until late.

I know they have nice comfy sofas and chairs - shall I wander over next Monday and check that they are actually open, that they have a coffee machine, how packed it is (and sound the staff out to make sure they won't have a spazz at the sight of a knitting needle?)
